A trip into the past at Ernest Hemingway’s house in Key West, FL

I fulfilled one of my dreams when I went to Key West to visit Hemingway’s house. It was an amazing experience to walk though the house where a great writer once lived. I went to his kitchen where many meals were prepared. I stood in the dining room where many conversations took place during meals. The things that must’ve been said, the discussions which took place, the ideas that were conceived during a dinner conversation and literary discussions I will never know. I stood in the space where it had taken place and that was good enough for me. The walls that now witness all the visitors walking through have seen and heard it all now hold photographs and painting for the world to see. As I walked to the second floor, I imagined Hemingway taking the each step to retire to his bedroom and I was now taking the same steps where he once walked in a different time. Experiencing the house was etched in your mind, but going to the guest house in the back of the main house was unforgettable. I stood immobile as I looked at his books, the chair and the type writer that he used to write so many works of literature like “A Farewell to Arms” “Death in the Afternoon” and “For Whom the Bell Tolls” to name a few. The beautiful house with the wraparound porch and the lush garden is now home to 44 cats. In its rooms and spaces are the memories of those who once called it home. We can now vicariously live in a different time and make our own memories though photographs in of our own time.
